Forwarding Your USC E-Mail

Many USC retirees have e-mail addresses through their ISP (Internet Service Provider). For example, an EarthLink customer might have an address such as “mymail@earthlink.net”. At the same time, retirees may still have USC computer accounts with active addresses such as “mymail@usc.edu”. If they use their ISP-provided e-mail addresses for their daily correspondence, they may be unaware that messages are still being sent to their USC addresses. In addition to important messages going unread, such unchecked messages can fill up their USC e-mail Inbox, resulting in e-mail quotas being exceeded and subsequent messages being returned to their senders.

There are two basic ways to handle such a situation. The simpler one will be discussed here; a slightly more complicated solution will be treated in a subsequent posting. The simpler solution is to have all messages that are currently being sent to one’s USC e-mail address forwarded to the recipient’s alternate e-mail address. In other words, all messages sent to “mymail@usc.edu” will be rerouted automatically to “mymail@earthlink.net”.

To forward your USC e-mail and at the same time keep your inbox emptied out, follow these steps:

1. After logging into the USC WebMail client, click on the Options button.

2. Select Settings to open up the “Settings” frame.

3. In the “Mail Forwarding” textbox, enter the e-mail address to which you would like to forward your incoming messages. For example, to forward messages to “mymail@earthlink.net”, enter this e-mail address in the textbox (rather than “ttrojan@usc.edu” in this example). [NOTE: You may have incoming messages simultaneously forwarded to more than one alternate address. In this case, enter each such address on a separate line in the textbox.]

4. If you would like to retain a copy of your messages in your USC Web mail Inbox, do NOT click on the Don’t leave a copy on server. Otherwise, DO check the box to prevent quota issues from arising, and your USC Inbox will not retain messages.

5. Click on the Save Changes button to complete the forwarding process.

USC ITS notes that “…changes made to e-mail forwarding settings may take up to 15 minutes to go into effect.”
